13-10-23 CLOSE GITMO NOW!

The Gitmo Witch Trials
Excerpt:
Almost all of the 164 detainees at Guantanamo Bay have never been charged with a crime. More than 80 inmates who have been cleared for release, by the U.S. government following an assessment by the Guantanamo Review Task Force set up by President Barack Obama, have yet to be released because of Congressional restrictions on the transfer of detainees to the U.S. and other countries. This, in part, is based on the Military Commissions Act of 2006, which states that "no court, justice or judge shall have jurisdiction to hear or consider any other action against the United States or its agents relating to any aspect of the detention, transfer, treatment, trial or conditions of confinement of an alien who is or was detained by the United States." On Friday, a federal appeals court wrestled with a challenge to force-feed hunger strikers, many of whom are far from death. Detainee lawyer Jon Eisenberg said that he objects to this incredibly painful process of nasogastric force-feeding (through the nose), in principle, arguing that the international community sees it as "unethical and equivalent to torture."

13-10-23 ISRAEL: Censorship in online sites, which document apparent criminality of the judiciary

In Israel, the judges are more active than in the US in blocking information regarding their own apparent criminality.
Today, two messages, supported by full documentation, regarding appearance of "Chief Clerk" of the Israeli Supreme Court with no lawful appointment record, were hidden under a nonsensical title: "Messages by Human Rights Alert".
With it, also the large number of reader of the original messages was eliminated.
Haaretz daily has also recently reported that the judges have initiated efforts to censor such information in various social online sites.  That - while the main stream media engage in self-censorship for fear of retaliation.

13-10-23 US: Letter To European Friends: Understanding "The Stupid" In U.S. Politics

Letter To European Friends: Understanding "The Stupid" In U.S. Politics
By Bernard Weiner
Excerpts:
Dear Wolfgang and Jacqueline:
"Are you Americans totally round the bend?
...
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Enlarging the frame means really enlarging it in order to see what is essentially being ignored these days:
>> While the politicians are engaged in their narrow-vision bumbling about, virtually nothing truly significant is being done to deal with global climate change and its massively destructive weather-change component. This is a much more dangerous development in human history than most other issues and it deserves a massive, worldwide mitigation program -- which it's not getting.
>> The increasingly catastrophic meltdown taking place at the crippled Fukushima nuclear facility in Japan is barely mentioned these days (too scary?). The radioactive fallout since the 2011 disaster is moving outward by sea and air currents -- and with even larger doses expected to reach America's West Coast in 2014. Where are the air and sea and fisheries monitors? Who's in charge?
...
>> Given the increasingly jobless recovery worldwide, and given the enormous gap between those who have and those who would like to have, we can expect more explosive social, class-based confrontations. This is a highly combustible mix, as "austerity" becomes the rule for the poor and middle class, while the rarefied upper classes are facilitated in growing wealthier.

13-10-23 US: New Jersey under the Greater Depression

Atlantic City during better days

Occupy Tel Aviv, October 23 - a young guest from New Jersey, working class, in his 20s, has just arrived.  His description of conditions in his area is much worse than I imagined.  Media don't give any clue of how deep today's depression is. And the official statistics are too abstract.
It starts from the fact that straight from the airport he sought a place to sleep for free in a park, and got to the Occupy Tel Aviv camp. He is not the first of this type either...  Already a couple of years ago I saw three young Americans in Jerusalem pooling up money to buy a ice cream bar...  American tourists used to be seen and act as millionaires some years ago.  With the falling value of the dollar (regardless of futile and costly efforts of the Bank of Israel to reverse the trend), everything is too expensive for him.
He described communities devastated by foreclosures, unemployment, shut down businesses, high crime, deserted areas in major cities with signs saying "no police coverage".  Atlantic City with shut down major entertainment outlets, and a new casino, built at investment of billions, which is likely to be shut down.
His personal life is best described as a migrant construction worker (welder).
And I don't believe the situation in the US has hit rock bottom yet either..
It did not have to be this way, robbing of the People continues at full blast...
